Candidacy to The John Marshall Review of Intellectual Property Law
The John Marshall Review for Intellectual Property Law ("RIPL") is a student-run organization that is committed to continuing the tradition of excellence in the field of intellectual property at The John Marshall Law School. RIPL is an outgrowth of John Marshall’s intellectual property law program, one of the oldest and most comprehensive programs in the United States. RIPL publishes scholarly work in four yearly issues by prominent and experienced judges, law school professors, and practitioners in the intellectual property field, along with student comments.
RIPL candidates and staff are dedicated to the research, writing, and publishing of each issue. Academic credit is available to those students who successfully complete the candidacy process. All students who are interested in becoming members of RIPL are encouraged to visit the office located at Room 800 of the CBA Building to learn more about the organization and the candidacy process or by emailing the Candidacy Editor, Ann Hagerty at ripl@jmls.edu. Transfer students are encouraged to contact the Candidacy Editor if interested in participating.
Grade On Candidates
John Marshall students are invited to join RIPL as a grade-on candidate if they are in the top twenty-five percent of their first year class and have an interest in intellectual property law. A student can show interest in intellectual property law by:
(1) having an undergraduate degree that qualifies them to sit for the United States Patent & Trademark Office registration examination;
(2) being enrolled in the joint JD/LLM IP Law Program;
(3) being enrolled in the JD Certificate in IP Law Program;
(4) having completed both Intellectual Property Lawyering Skills courses in their first year of law school; or
(5) being enrolled in at least one introductory intellectual property law course in the immediate semester after the student becomes eligible for candidacy.
Write-on Candidates
Students are invited to participate in the RIPL write-on program if they are in the top fifty percent of their class and have completed between twenty-four (24) and thirty-eight (38) credit hours. The write-on program requires participants to prepare a ten (10) page legal analysis of a chosen topic.
All accepted RIPL candidates (both grade-on and write-on) are required to complete one student comment that is accepted by the RIPL Board, in order to become RIPL staff members.
Any one who has a question concerning the RIPL candidacy process should contact the Candidacy Editor, Ann Hagerty, at ripl@jmls.edu.
